The carapace is thick and heavy, it is very oval and tall. Each shield is light yellow in the center and black towards the ends.
The extremities and the head are brown, with a solid and rounded head. The male is smaller than the female.
They live in secondary humid forest, flooded lands or in remnants of forests near the rivers.
They are completely adapted for terrestrial life. The males recognize one another performing a lateral movement of the head, movement that the females do not perform.
They feed on herbs, plants, fallen fruits and occasionally carrion.
There is not a marked mating season, the female can have two sets per year. The clutch consists of 4 to 8 white eggs.
This species is threatened by the destruction of its habitat and use it as a pet.
