• They are aquatic and terrestrial turtles, during the night they actively wander on land after torrential rains.
• When in danger, as a defense measure, this turtle hides inside its shell. Its plastron is divided into three parts, the central part is fixed and the other two are articulated, allowing them to close like a box.
Reproduction:
• Oviparous.
• Courtship and mating usually occurs in the water. The case turtle reaches its sexual maturity, starting at 5 years of age.
Feeding:
• Omnivorous diet, eats fish, tadpoles, worms, molluscs, insects, and occasionally aquatic plants, fruits and even carrion.
Distribution:
• Native to Central and South America in countries such as: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.
