Oscar Fish

Oscar Fish

  • Scientific name:
    Astronotus Ocellatus

Oscar fish thrive in flooded river plains outside of the Amazon. They can also be found in lakes and ponds throughout this region.

Oscar Fish

  • Astronotus Ocellatus

Although Oscar fish are considered aggressive, they are not "super" aggressive. What I want to say is that they are more territorial but they will not necessarily intimidate all the fish in the tank just because they can do it. Most Oscars will allow you to keep aquarium companions with them. Please remember that as with any cichlid, each Oscar is different and some may be more aggressive than others.

Oscar fish grow up to 16 inches in the wild but it is very likely that they will only reach between 10 and 14 inches in the aquarium tank at home. The Oscar fish is not only a very long fish, it is also a very thick specimen. This fish will grow to be very big! Many get to weigh more than 2 pounds.
