Commonly called red-tailed boa, it is one of the subspecies that make up the species Boa constrictor, a large ophidian that is distributed in wooded areas
It is distributed in the basins of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers.
It inhabits all of northern Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Venezuela, central and southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and northern Bolivia. It has been cited repeatedly for northeastern Argentina but these references should be assigned to Boa constrictor amarali.
In Brazil, the subspecies Boa constrictor constrictor is found from the Amazon basin to the northeastern and eastern Brazilian regions. To the south, contact Boa constrictor amarali, which inhabits the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás to the south, reaching the states of São Paulo and Paraná.
