This magnificent butterfly fish usually exceeds thirty centimeters in size, with a maximum record of 45 centimeters.

The body is black, with scales lined with golden yellow on the back edge, except for the head and abdomen, which is also more bluish. A large yellow spot appears at the base of the pectoral fins and the filament of the dorsal fin is also yellow. The eyes are inside yellow spots finely bordered blue by the bottom.

The juveniles have four curved white bands and poorly defined; one behind the eye, the second, which is the most visibile, in the first third of the body, behind the pectorals, the third in the back of the body, and the fourth on the base of the caudal fin.

Its diet includes various invertebrates, algae and you can even see it deworming other larger fish, especially the juveniles.
